Since its first inception in1992, the Faculty of Fine Arts Biennial has showcased the varied practices of teachers from the Department of Fine Arts, offering students and the community the opportunity to glimpse their work outside of the classroom.

Their contributions to this exhibition span a variety of media鈥攑ainting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and the written word, among others鈥攊llustrating a profound engagement with both traditional practices and new technologies.聽 聽At the core of the many explorations that this exhibition offers are complexities surrounding the environment (both natural and built);

S.P.A.C.E. PERSPECTIVE(S)

Beginning Wednesday, April 24th, S.P.A.C.E. (Sciences Participating with Arts and Culture in Education), presents PERSPECTIVES. Students, alumni, staff and faculty have all reflected on how different perspectives are created, perceived and represented. Through a multi-disciplinary selection of new writing, photography, installations, videos, illustrations and paintings, this exhibition is a lively and engaged investigation into the meaning of perspective with a focus on gender, kinship, race and the production of knowledge.




Moridja Kitenge Banza: Chiromancies / Palm Readings

Accomplished multimedia artist Moridja Kitenge Banza presents new paintings and work in video exploring the interstices of personal, cultural, and global politics.聽 聽His work often blurs reality and fiction, calling into question narratives of history , memory, and identity.聽 Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1980, he studied at the聽Acad茅mie des Beaux-arts de Kinshasa, and then at the聽脡cole R茅gionale des Beaux-arts de Nantes, France.

In 2010 he was awarded First Prize at the Dakar Biennale, Senegal, for his video聽Hymne 脿 nous and installation De 1848 脿 nos jours.聽

Hairdresser鈥檚 Hymn to Venus is an action-based exhibition that exists as a reproduction of Botticelli鈥檚 famous painting The Birth of Venus (1450). The work retells the Greco-Roman myth of creation by reducing it to a set of actions that each generate a symbolic material growth.

Dawson alumni Constantinos Giannoussis, Petro Psillos, and Sylvia Trotter Ewens, along with Alexanne Dunn and Sonya Kertesz present recent paintings questioning human domination and control of the environment. Problematizing conceptions of nature and ‘the natural’ in the era of the Anthropocene, these works redefine stereotyped notions of landscape painting.

The Wound Hospital

The Wound Hospital:聽 Adrienne Surprenant presents a series of photographs taken by Dawson alumna, Adrienne Surprenant, in the mountains of Balaveng, Cameroon, in Central Africa.

A graduate of Dawson’s Professional Photography Department in 2012, Adrienne Surprenant has forged an international career in photojournalism.听听Her images have been published in聽 Paris Match,听El Pais Semanal,听Le Monde Diplomatique, and The Globe and Mail.听听




Replay: 3D Animation and CGI, 10 years in the Making
