Academic Internship Placement
The Computer Science Technology Program is a comprehensive 3-year program offering an immersive internship course where students apply the theoretical and practical skills they have mastered.
Research and Innovation
Our students are able to support research and innovation projects with tasks such as:
- Automating data collection, web scraping, and data cleaning techniques to streamline data processing.
- Developing proof-of-concepts for Internet of Things (IoT) applications that bring cutting-edge ideas to life.
- Creating simulations and prototypes to innovate solutions for real-world challenges.
- Developing user-friendly interfaces to interact with research platforms.
- Assisting in the automation and optimization of development, testing, and deployment.

Dawson Computer Science Faculty Support
In order to support a variety of research projects with academic partners, the Computer Science faculty assigns each student a mentor to support them during their 7-week internship. Mentors provide the following guidance:
- Conduct meetings with students and academic supervisor (stake holder) to help extract requirements and set expectations.
- Validate designs/proposal (made by student based on user requirements) for scope, choice of tools/resources, feasibility, timeline estimates.
- Coach student through the process of adjusting project scope or priorities.
- Direct student to relevant resources to complete the project (e.g. docs and subject matter experts).
- Be available for one 30-minute 1-1 meeting per week (ad hoc) to answer questions (e.g. help with tools or debugging, give feedback about specific aspects as requested by student).

Timeline
Labs are invited to submit a job post to our system allowing students and the internship coordinators to see the various positions available. Dawson students become available for internships around mid-April (exact date to be confirmed each semester). Students are required to complete a minimum of 7 weeks with a lab or project while being supervised by Dawson. Dawson’s internship program coordinators finish evaluating students at the end of May. However, labs can choose to hire a student for a duration exceeding the minimum 7 weeks and will be provided with tax forms for the complete period.
