Your first meeting with a mental health professional will focus on your reasons for coming. This private meeting will give the mental health professional an opportunity to get an initial understanding of your situation and will allow you to explore the range of possible actions that you may choose to pursue. A follow-up appointment will be made if necessary.
Talking over your concerns or problems with a trained professional can help in a variety of ways. You may find yourself feeling overwhelmed at times with increasing academic and personal responsibilities. You may want to talk about confusion over future career and educational paths, goal-setting and other academic concerns. You may be struggling with an issue that is affecting your ability to focus on your studies effectively. Looking at the situation with a mental health professional can provide new approaches to problem solving, as well as support and encouragement to make changes in your life. Personal issues such as depression, family troubles, anxiety, loss and grief, shyness, relationship problems, addictions, motivation, and sexual orientation are examples of what can be discussed.
If you are at risk of harm to yourself or others, or require immediate care, call 9-1-1 or go directly to the nearest emergency room.
