English as a Second Language – Conversation Workshop – Beginner (Online)

Prerequisite: To have taken introductory English courses or attained a level聽3 with the Center for Training and Development.
You do not need to be at ease with speaking (as this is the objective of the present workshop), but you should at least : possess basic vocabulary (the date, the 7 days of the week, the 12 months, the colours鈥); know the basic phonetics in English and be able to read aloud simple words and sentences. You should also be familiar with the verbs 鈥渢o be鈥 and 鈥渢o have鈥 in the present tense, common verbs representing daily actions, and the basic structure of a sentence.
Overall Goals:

  1. This course aims to provide students at the beginner level with the opportunity to enhance and practice their speaking and comprehension skills while enriching their vocabulary.
  2. Through roleplay and group discussions, students will develop confidence as English speakers. Emphasis will be placed on speaking and listening skills, with particular attention given to enriching both vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.
  3. The selected topics and subjects pertain to introduction, family, health, shopping, environment, vacations and travel, society, and life in Montreal/Quebec. The course is designed to refine English skills that have already been acquired.

Intended Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Introducing and speaking about yourself, your family, and friends. Giving advice and making suggestions.
  • Knowing how to ask questions and answer them affirmatively or negatively, in different situations.
  • Expressing your interests and opinions in a simple way: what you like and what you don鈥檛 like.
  • Speaking in the present about your habits and daily activities.
  • Talking about past and future plans, travels, and leisure activities.

Methodology:
A variety of learning techniques such as role-play and discussions will be used to develop oral fluency.
