Earth Weeks 2023 at Dawson

A full program of activities is happening at Dawson from April 17-28 for students and employees , connect with Nature and learn about ways to live more sustainably.

On Tuesday, April 18, Jonathan Egan鈥檚 Introduction to Outdoor Education Class participated in a Bioblitz in the Peace Garden with Biology teacher Brian Mader, who is leading the 1,000 Species in 1,000 Days initiative. For a few hours, the students observed life in the Peace Garden and added to Dawson鈥檚 count. One way, they observed many kinds of life was by lifting up a slab of old tree trunk in the eco circle of the Peace Garden (pictured).

All students and employees are invited to help identify 1,000 plants, animals and other kinds of life on our city block in downtown Montreal. To date, a total of 455 species have been identified. From April 10-17, the 成人黑料-Campus Biodiversity Network on the free app had 58 new observations, 12 new species added, and four new observers.


Deadline extended to April 14 for Teaching Excellence nominations

All students and employees are invited to nominate outstanding teachers for the Director General鈥檚 Teaching Excellence Award from now through Friday, April 14 at 11 p.m.

Graduation will be June 20

April 5th, 2023

This year, graduation will take place on Tuesday, June 20 at Theatre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts. All staff are most welcome to attend but will need a ticket.

The information and invite will go out to Dawson students who graduated in the Summer and Fall 2022 semesters and this semester鈥檚 potential grads this week. More details will be communicated to the community in June, including how to get a ticket. It is expected that there will be a ceremony in the afternoon and another one in the evening.


Students respond to Data Journalism Challenge

All students were invited to participate in a Data Journalism Challenge March 25-26. The objective was to introduce students to the broad field of聽Data Journalism, wherein large datasets from various sources are compiled into a visual aid at the centre of a story meant to inform the general public. 聽Inspired by the work of聽聽students were provided publicly available C02聽emissions data for Canada and ideas for exploring other climate-themed data sets to create their own data journalism project.

The attendance was better than expected with about 80 students attending a Saturday morning workshop session run by Sameer Bhatnagar and Vanessa Gordon and 45 students completed the challenge during the weekend. Mentors and judges volunteered their time to support this event and expressed excitement about doing it again.


ChatGPT and student intern talks featured at DawsCon

Students were given the opportunity to push ChatGPT to its limits in an AI jailbreak competition on March 24 and ChatGPT was also the focus of a popular workshop led by Robert Stephens Notably, DawsCon was designed to be a truly student-centered event with more than 30 students presenting work in progress on projects related to a wide range of AI topics in conjunction with internships being undertaken with the Applied AI Institute. Next year, organizers DawsonAI and the Computer Science Department plan even more student presentations for what is hoped will be an annual event.

Sustainable Happiness in Mexico

Jennifer de Vera and Chris Adam of the Sustainability Office were in Mexico in late March to see the final projects of students in the Dawson-developed Sustainable Happiness Course at Preparatoria Comunitaria Tres Mar铆as, a senior high school located in the mountains near the city of Cuernavaca. Jenn and Chris were also on hand to give the students their SH certificates at the school's 25th anniversary.

Many students gave things away as part of their SH final project, Jenn said. Noteworthy projects included a grandfather-granddaughter intergenerational gardening project with a garden herb give-away, a succulent plant give-away with pots that were painted with positive quotes, and a mushroom identification project on campus. "They use what they have and the resources of the land," Jenn said. She came home inspired by the Mexicans' warmth and authentic community and reported that the Mexican partners are eager to continue their projects and their partnership with Dawson.


Law, Society and Justice student is a 2023 Loran Scholar!

Changemaker Mariana Cueto Mendoza is one of 36 students across Canada to win the Loran Scholarship, the country鈥檚 largest and most comprehensive four-year undergraduate award, valued at $100,000.

Silver and bronze for Dawson Blues Men’s and Women’s Div. 1 Basketball

The Dawson Div. 1 men's and women's basketball teams won national silver and bronze, respectively, at the CCAA National Tournament this past weekend. Bleed Blue! #DawsonProud!


Interview with screenwriter & Dawson grad Ryan Christopher Churchill

Ryan Christopher Churchill (Creative Arts, 1999) is the screenwriter of Simulant, a science fiction thriller that will be released in Canada on April 7.

Simulant tells the story of a humanoid A.I.'s attempt to win over a widow's heart, which places it in the path of a government agent trying to stop the rise of machine consciousness. The film stars some of the most popular actors right now: Simu Liu, Sam Worthington, Jordana Brewster and Robbie Amell.聽The trailer can be viewed .
