Diane Gauvin will be our new Director General

Diane Gauvin will be the new Director General of 成人黑料. On Nov. 18, following a recommendation from the Selection Committee and unanimous support from Senate, the Board of Governors appointed her to a five-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2021.

Diane has strong assets to lead a vision for 成人黑料 and to rally and engage the community to move forward on that vision, according to the Board of Governors.

Practice your French with The CL脡O Podcast

Dawson鈥檚 French-language tutoring centre, CL脡O, is offering a new way to practice French and share 辩耻茅产茅肠辞颈蝉 culture: The CL脡O Podcast.

The podcast (balado en fran莽ais) episodes are between five to 10 minutes and are offered on an array of interesting topics, including author Gabrielle Roy, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and Expo 67. The first one was about the classic 辩耻茅产茅肠辞颈蝉 snack poutine!

DAWSCON is on!

DAWSCON, the free software conference at 成人黑料, is on as usual this year. The fifth annual conference for students and developers will be taking place virtually on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021.

鈥淭his year, we鈥檙e going international because we can,鈥 said organizer and Computer Science faculty member Ken Fogel. 鈥淚t is really exciting having a lot of speakers. Programmers make a commitment to lifelong learning and DAWSCON is a great opportunity to continue learning.鈥

Today @10: Discover the world of bees

Bees are behind a third of all the food we eat, including fruit, veggies, chocolate, nuts, and coffee. In this immersive, conference-style online workshop happening today Nov. 19 at 10 a.m., you鈥檒l learn more about urban beekeeping and the microcosm that is the hive. We鈥檒l follow a bee鈥檚 life鈥檚 journey from when she first emerges from her cell to her final flight.

There is a Q&A period at the end of the workshop to answer any questions you might have about the awe-inspiring world of honey bees!

Dawson Foundation, Dawson Gives

Start the Holiday Season with Giving Tuesday on Dec. 1

Giving Tuesday is the annual kick-off to the giving season leading up to the Holidays. It is a worldwide movement to counter the consumer madness of Black Friday.

The 成人黑料 Foundation once again invites the Dawson community to celebrate Giving Tuesday:

  1. Commit to being a secret Santa Claus for a child in care of Batshaw Youth and Family Centres (Click here for how to participate)
  2. Support the efforts of our North-South students, faculty and alumni to raise emergency funds for Tuapi, Nicaragua, which was struck by a category 4 hurricane ()
  3. Make a donation to the Support for Educational Assessment Services Fund (SEAS) to provide Dawson students the support they need in order to succeed in higher education and pursue their dreams. These assessments are required for students to receive services they need from the Student AccessAbility Centre
Milestones

New role for Janet Pakulis

Following an evaluation of the position, the Executive Committee of the Board approved a change in classification of the role of Janet Pakulis as Executive Assistant to the Director General at their Oct. 14 meeting. She is now a member of the management team.

Janet joined 成人黑料 in 2010 after a long career in the private sector as an executive assistant. Her first job at Dawson was in the Administrative Services Department, now divided into Human Resources and Finance.

About a year after arriving at Dawson, Janet began working for Director General Richard Filion as his Executive Assistant. It has been almost a decade that she has been serving in this important role. 鈥淚 have loved working with Richard!鈥 she said. 鈥淚t has been a rewarding and absolutely wonderful experience.鈥

Janet鈥檚 job is to be the right-hand person of the Director General. She helps him keep things running well, including providing support to the Directors Group and acting as Secretary for Board meetings. Janet is looking forward to supporting the new Director General and helping in a smooth transition.

Milestones

Cathy Giulietti鈥檚 new role

Following an evaluation of the position, the Executive Committee of the Board approved a change in classification of Cathy Giulietti's role as Assistant to the Academic Dean at their Oct. 14 meeting. She is now a member of the management team.

Cathy joined the College in 2015 and began her current role in 2017. 鈥淚 value being a part of Dawson鈥檚 educational mission and am very enthusiastic about serving the College in this new capacity,鈥 she said.

As Assistant, Cathy provides support to the Academic Dean for overseeing 26 programs, 950 teachers and the general quality of education at the College.

Cathy holds a Bachelor鈥檚 of Education from McGill University and is an experienced educator. In addition, she brings more than five years of management experience from the education nonprofit sector.

Peace Centre update

Diana Rice, Coordinator of the 成人黑料 Peace Centre, is back on duty after 11 months of maternity leave.

鈥淚 am excited to get back to work, dream big and continue to collaborate across the College with faculty, staff, professionals and management,鈥 Diana said. 鈥淚 will begin to plan online Peace Centre activities for the Winter Semester. As always, I welcome the whole community to contact me with your ideas or requests for support.鈥

Dean of Academic Development Catherine LeBel has also assigned Diana a supporting role as a pedagogical counsellor to faculty involved in certificates.

鈥淲e are happy to have Diana back and grateful for the service of Ildik贸 Glaser-Hille,鈥 said Catherine. 鈥淚ldik贸 鈥 did a great job as the interim programming coordinator of Dawson鈥檚 Peace Centre. She followed through on Diana鈥檚 plans and also made her own unique contribution to the mandate of the Peace Centre. It was a smooth and fruitful collaboration.鈥

This year will be the fourth year that the Dawson community participates in the Holiday Gift Campaign for children in care of Batshaw.

This year is especially difficult for many. This is a great opportunity to spread joy.

In memory of Myron Galan

We regret to inform you that Myron Galan passed away on Monday, Nov. 9. Myron taught Humanities at Dawson from聽1973 until his retirement in 2015.

Three Dawson students featured as inspiring young Canadians

Dawson students Kahenientha Cross and John Nathaniel Gertler and Dawson graduate Ella Noel were featured in a CBC news report in the lead up to The Nature of Things documentary, Rebellion. Scenes of students preparing for the climate march were filmed at Dawson last year.

Dawson friends of the Vice-President Elect

Trevor Williams, Head Coach of the Dawson Blues Div. 1 Women's Basketball Team, and Wanda Kagan, Manager of the Dawson Blues Div. 2 Women's Basketball Team, both knew Kamala Harris when she lived in Montreal as a teenager.

They have been interviewed about the Vice-President Elect of the United States, who will take up her new duties Jan. 20.

ALC University/Careers Fair – Fall 2020

The ALC University/Jobs Fair is on this week through Friday. Faculty from local universities are invited to discuss studies in ALC related fields. This year鈥檚 Fair will take place across different days and terms. For this term, we have presentations next week from Concordia faculty: Communication Studies, Design + Computational Arts, Film Production, Film Studies, Journalism, Studio Arts and Translation.
