Active Learning at Dawson is celebrating a birthday in 2022!

Ten years ago, something special took root at Dawson. Initiated and driven by a diverse group of teachers, supported by a rich foundation of evidence and research, and with the goal of developing better teaching and learning practices, a rough-around-the-edges Learning Community of a dozen or so individuals designed and oversaw the development of Dawson鈥檚 first Active Learning (AL) classroom and grew into the Dawson Active Learning Community (DALC).

Since then, we have evolved, adapted, and grown into a multi-faceted community and we have overseen the development of a variety of Active Learning classrooms.

SPACE students win the Astro Prize at the McGill Physics Hackathon

Dawson students once again took part in the McGill Physics Hackathon which took place this year on November 6-7. The goal of the friendly computer programming competition was simple: to welcome everyone into the wonderful world of scientific computing!

Over a 24-hour period, participants had the opportunity to work on projects combining the physical sciences and computing, and to meet and learn from like-minded, curious, and passionate individuals as well as with experts from both academia and industry.

A team of mainly Dawson students鈥擲hawn Maor, Syphax Ramdani, Joey Yu鈥攚on the Astrophysics prize for their project, Star Formation, and were awarded telescopes! A write-up of their experience can be found on the SPACE website:

The students also earned credits towards the new SPACE: Arts and Sciences Certificate by competing and creating a project for the hackathon.

Volunteer for an hour or more and grow our Living Campus

Do you have an hour or more to help us fill up our volunteer shifts wrapping gifts at Alexis Nihon Mall Dec. 6 through Dec. 24? All proceeds will support community-building projects at Dawson. The Director General has shared this project with managers and we expect that managers will be able to offer some time toward this worthwhile project.

The gift wrapping service and a store space have been offered to 成人黑料 so we can raise funds for projects through the Foundation鈥檚 Living Campus Fund, the umbrella under which Dawson has received local, national and international recognition, but whose initiatives are not funded by the Ministry of Education.

Unfold ALC Festival Fall 2021

Unfold, the title and theme of this year鈥檚 Arts, Literature and Communication (ALC) Festival, presents creative works by students in the ALC program made in the first semester of in-person learning since March 2020. To unfold is to smooth surfaces, to disclose what is or has been hidden from view, to reveal secrets and potentials. Unfold celebrates the opening up and continuation of our lives as the pandemic starts to wane.

Some of the works in the festival reflect upon the changes undertaken in the last 18 months and speculate on changes still to come.听 Others address how COVID has altered our customs of interaction with each other and the effects these transformations have had on our family life and friendships. All the works on view remind us that new ways of knowing and being are always unfolding.
