Dawson’s first C茅gep en spectacle packed the house

Dawson's very first C茅gep en spectacle talent show was a great success. On Feb. 2, the audience of 200 people enjoyed 22 acts, all 100% Dawson student talent. At the end of the night, judges Andr茅a Cole (Dean of Creative and Applied Arts), Jacinta Luis (Faculty, Music) and visiting guest judge Chad Lindsay, a jazz music teacher from Vanier College, chose Aliyah听Sarimazi to be Dawson's entry in the regional contest on March 25 at C茅gep du Vieux-Montr茅al. The audience chose Clara Nhi锚n听L茅vesque as the fan favourite and she will be the replacement entry should Aliyah not be able to compete in the regionals.

In addition to a fun evening, a total of $1,600 and three big grocery bags of nonperishable food were collected for Moisson Montr茅al.

“Happy chemist” Yann Brouillette wins national award for excellence in teaching chemistry

Dawson鈥檚 Yann Brouillette 鈥渋s not a听mad听scientist, he鈥檚 always a听happy听chemist,鈥� wrote the Chemical Institute of Canada in their Jan. 12 announcement that he is the The award is given to one teacher in Canada every year in recognition of excellence in teaching chemistry.

Two exceptional Dawson students are Loran Scholar finalists

Dawson students Sophia El Bakir (Social Science-North-South Studies) and Mariana Cueto Mendoza (Social Science-Law, Society and Justice) are headed to Toronto for the Loran Scholar national interviews, which take place Feb. 24-26.

Dawson ALC student wins College Writers Award and another is a finalist

The Quebec Writers鈥� Federation has recognized the original writing of two students in Dawson鈥檚 Arts, Literature and Communication Program. Literature Profile student for her work, entitled Misremembering. Eden received a prize of $1,000 and her work will be published in carte blanche, an online literary journal produced by the QWF. Arts and Culture Profile student for the same award for her essay, entitled When cliches are okay.

MMIWGT2S to be remembered on Feb. 14

The red dresses currently hanging in the atrium are there in memory of the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans, and 2 Spirited (MMIWGT2S) peoples across North America.

Several Dawson students, including Indigenous students working in collaboration with the First Peoples鈥� Centre, will be organizing an awareness-raising vigil on Feb. 14. Valentine鈥檚 Day, typically a day to show love to a significant other, was determined to be the best day for the annual awareness campaign by Indigenous communities. The day is an opportunity to show love to those affected by such violence and to raise awareness of the international crisis.

The entire Dawson community is welcome to join the First Peoples鈥� Centre at 12 p.m. on the Feb. 14 for a vigil in Oliver鈥檚 (2C.17).

Dawson’s Golf Classic returns June 8

The Dawson Golf Classic will celebrate its 16th edition as golfers hit the greens on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Summerlea Golf & Country Club in Vaudreuil-Dorion.

Players can look forward to great prizes and very special guests, which will be announced on the Dawson Golf Classic web pages at /golf/.

The sky in this photo is almost the same shade of blue as our Dawson blue, said Debra Gill of the Social Science and Business Technologies Office. She captured the mid-winter beauty on Jan. 31 and sent the photo to the Communications Office. All employees and students are welcome to send their photos of Dawson and Dawson campus life to the Comms Office, who will gratefully receive them and provide credit if used.

Dawson鈥檚 Sustainability Advisory Committee is developing a Landscape Master Plan and wants to hear from the Dawson community. With the community鈥檚 input and ideas, committee members are dreaming about and reviewing how we use the college building envelope and grounds.

Filiations听features new work by Nadia Myre (Kitigan Zibi), and Nico Williams (Aamjiwnaang), both acclaimed artists who are linked by their former teacher-student relationship (Myre supervised Williams鈥� MFA work at Concordia University). This exhibition will draw out lines of affiliation and commitment in their practices providing an unparalleled opportunity to see two generations of artists staking out common ground 鈥� pedagogically, aesthetically, and politically. On until March 11 at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery at Dawson.

IndigeSTEM students in Warrior Up documentary series

Filming took place at Dawson on Jan. 24 and 30 for the production of a documentary series entitled Warrior Up, which will air on APTN and stream on听 APTNlumi later this year. The series follows inspiring and activist Indigenous youth aged 15 to 26 as they face challenges and make positive changes happen in their communities and beyond.

Film actor Joshua Odjick from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation was the host for this episode and he interviewed the student founders of IndigeSTEM peer tutoring group, Rotshenn贸n:ni Two-Axe (Health Science) & Kayla Spencer-Young (Pure & Applied Science), and their faculty advisor Joel Trudeau (Physics). They also captured footage of the students at the college and doing a moose heart dissection lab.

"We are very grateful for the opportunity to share the work we've been doing," Rotshenn贸n:ni and Kayla said. "We believe that shedding light on the project and its impacts can have a positive outcome for the Indigenous community. Overall the experience was very rewarding and the crew was quite fun to work with. We hope to inspire others to undertake similar projects and to create change within their own communities."

The Oresteia on until Feb. 11

From Feb. 1 to 11, the third-year students of the Professional Theatre Program at 成人黑料 will perform a contemporary adaptation of The Oresteia听directed by Leslie Baker.

The Oresteia听is one of our oldest surviving theatrical texts, first performed nearly 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece. It is composed of three plays which American playwright Ellen McLaughlin has adapted into a single, three-act play, rich with challenging roles for actors.听The Oresteia focuses on a family trapped by a cycle of violence, as they seek revenge for their murdered loved ones. The myth of the House of Atreus continues to fascinate audiences, as it investigates the human compulsion toward violence, and the subsequent human desire for revenge. Matinees available tomorrow Feb. 9.

CCDMD call for projects deadline is March 3

The听Centre coll茅gial de d茅veloppement de mat茅riel didactique (CCDMD)听produces printed, digital and online materials for teaching staff and students throughout the Qu茅bec college system. Its mandate is both to ensure that students in the system have access to quality educational materials in both French and English, and to contribute to the development of these materials at the various stages of production.

Those wishing to submit a proposal for the creation, adaptation and translation of digital or print educational resource that is suitable to the context in Qu茅bec may do so during the Call for Projects open until March 3. Consult the听Call for听Projects听Guide听and complete the听Project Presentation Form听in the听听section.

All projects must be presented by a teacher from a public or private CEGEP in Qu茅bec or an external specialist in the discipline supported by an academic dean.
